Dungeon Demon maps are saved as text files in XML format. The reason for this is to facilitate Dungeon Demon maps being used by other programs and so that Dungeon Demon can be used for custom projects such as being the map editor for computer game projects. Additionally, XML is a human readable file format (more or less) so there are times when you may want to hand edit the text file, for example if you have renamed a homemade graphic that appears a 100 times in a map then you could load up the text file and do a search and replace for the old graphic name and rename it to the new file name.

More information on the XML format, which is still subject to change, is available upon request by registered purchasers of the program.
