I have finally called it quits with the new VC++ compiler and gone back to VC++ 6.0. Microsoft seem to have broken just about everything that I use with the 2005 version and I was gamely sticking it out in the hope that I would learn a few more things and get comfortable with it. Nope. The very bad Brief emulation (how can you regress Brief emulation...), the overly eager error reporting, the fact that you can't link in some older libraries (Freetype wouldn't link for some reason until I went and got a new version) and the much crippled recompile on the fly feature have just been a complete nightmare. This morning I was working on Font Fiend and decided that it was worth an hour to recreate the project for VC++ 2006 and just get back to work. I'm pretty happy about the decision - once I got the project rebuilt and up and running I realized just how loathesome working with the new IDE had been and breathed a big sigh of relief. I've gotten a lot of the windows framework up and running and should actually be seeing fonts in the tool this week - once I can do that, read and write the font files and adjust the hotspots then the tool will actually be useable in my production pipeline. At that point I will get to the really fun part where I can work on the font effects and making the compositing tool useful.
Entourage is back on! I've had the theme song running in my head for the past couple of days. My brother can't get past the fact that the show is roughly based on Mark Wahlberg - not entirely fair because Markey Mark has been solid in a lot of great movies, including last years "The Departed" which I really enjoyed. But anyhow, Entourage is an event and if you haven't seen it yet you should do yourself a favor and go get the DVD's. You are in for a real treat.
Peace-out,
L.
