Canadian Health Care

OK, another post that's not exactly about game development - although as I get older my design ideas are drifting towards being more about simulations, money and politics so maybe HMO Simulator is somewhere in my future. Anyhow, my father-in-law sent this you-tube link over this morning, Entertaining Brain Cancer Video.

Rather timely as my father is in Vancouver this week to visit specialists over lumps in his neck that have, finally, been confirmed to be a recurrence of cancer that was beaten with chemo 8 years ago. His lump returned earlier this summer, mid-June time frame, and they took weeks to get him in for a CAT-SCAN procedure (skipping a biopsy...). Last month they finally got around to taking a biopsy and now, with symptoms spreading, he is in Vancouver for more consultation. I know that balancing needs, resources and costs are part of the complex picture that is health care but a little common sense would suggest that a recurrent cancer should get immediate attention. Even if you throw compassion out the window, the measures they will need to go to with a spreading cancer would seem likely to be more expensive than simply getting to work right away.

On the topic of expediency and common sense... The guy in the video is now suing the Ontario government for 28K that was required for his brain surgery. Given the cost of lawyers and court time... couldn't somebody in that system take some initiative and say, "Oops, our bad. Sorry that you went through that nonsense in a period of extreme stress and that we jeopardized your health with our lack of competency." Cut the guy a check and stop spending $ on lawyers that might be pushed back into the health care system?

Signing off, frustrated with medical care in Canada,
L
