It's been an odd week. I spent Monday night in Prince Rupert with dad who had to be in surgery (a long awaited ankle fusion) early enough in the AM that we didn't want to get up and make the drive. Spent my hours at the hospital pondering how to tie off the balancing and tuning that Big$hot needs. Came home, went to hockey last night, came back from hockey too wired to sleep and sat down and tuning Big$hot and playing poker until 5 AM. But I think I got somewhere. One thing that I did was drop in some startup diagnostics that puts all of the properties into a variety of known states and then dumps log files that I can compare for the purposes of play balancing. Printing these out so I could pore over them while eating my shreddies was illuminating. I'm not done yet by any stretch but I just played 12 months of the game - the length of game the free demo gives you - and it felt kinda balanced. Maybe even more importantly, I was playing on complex and I placed, drum roll please... dead last! Wahoo! Maybe the game is finally starting to get good enough, I might even have to rotate some of the "hard" dials backward a little.
Time to knock off for the day. Doesn't seem impossible tonight that a saleable version of the game will be up by months end.
Peace,
L
