I thought the surfer folks were spot on. Rebecca De Mornay did get a bit tiresome - she seemed to be on a continual rant by season end. The stilted language of Deadwood kind of worked for me in DW but not here - in fact all the hangers on at the motel needed more work. But the Yost family, the surfing, the quirky story - there was something great there for me in the first few episodes and I'm sorry that they won't get another kick at the can to find the magic on a more consistent basis.
While we are bagging on the mighty HBO... Entourage has taken a serious turn for the worse. The season opener with the boys on location shooting Medillin was sweet and the Billy Walsh character - played by Rhys Coiro - is dynamite. But the thing feels a bit defanged. They've cut the nudity and they don't play golf on rooftop anymore. I don't need people to lose their laundry to enjoy a TV show but I think it was an important part of the vicarious thrill. That and the intelligent, razor sharp sparring between Ari and Eric are AWOL. And, despite a great line from Ari Gold (played by Jeremy Piven) last Sunday, "We agreed to suffer through monogamy together, please don't do this!", even Ari has lost some of his edge. To be honest, I think they are cleaning it up for prime time and it's not becoming.
We are winding up our great vacation here at the lake. Font Fiend is progressing - I think I now have the complete feature set designed and now I just have to finish banging out the code to see if it feels right. I made a render last night that I'm pretty pleased with and I expect to be able to share screenshots as soon as I am back in Canada at the end of August. In honor of John From C. I will be spinning Johnny Appleseed on the virtual turntable tonight.
Peace-out,
L.
