Poker is Life
November 3rd, 2007
I was reading an old Newsweek recently and this guy was going on about how great soccer is, how it can be a model for peaceful interaction between all peoples. I love it when people get excited about something and soon come to the inevitable conclusion that "Dude, skydiving is like a metaphor for life." Followed by profound observations about why sky diving is indeed a metaphor for life. For crying out loud. Gimme a break.
Sooo, here's why Texas Hold 'Em is a metaphor for life. Sometimes things go your way for a while - when they do you have to make the most of them, sometimes you feast but there are usually going to be famines as well. AK suited in the hole is potential - don't count your chickens before the flop. A few poor decisions can cost you a lot of hard work. 2-7 off suit can still be a full house after the flop - perseverance can pay off. Lastly, sometimes you can BS your way out of anything if you are just brazen enough. But you don't want to push your luck every day or somebody who knows what they are talking about or is just as foolish is going to help you get yourself into trouble.
There it is, country wisdom Texas style.
Peace-out,
L
