I build all of my software on top of a hardware abstraction layer which, perhaps not surprisingly, I call the Rusty Axe API. This layer has the benefit of giving me a neat way for other companies to port my games - for example, Real E$tate Empire is now available from Red Marble Games using this technique. This methodology makes me hesitant to buy into other peoples libraries or even things like openGL because every library I add to my process makes future porting to devices (say like the iPhone), just a little bit more of a headache.
So, last Friday, it became apparent that it was time to just write myself a software only roto-zoomer. I first started looking on the internet - there is a lot of free C code floating around in the world and I'm lazy enough that I would prefer to snag code that has been labelled as free for use rather than write it myself. But I couldn't find any that wasn't bound up in openGL or other schemes. I just needed some code that would write a rotated and scaled bitmap into another bitmap.
I rarely release code into the wild myself. For one thing I'm constantly tinkering with my code and I'm usually taking stuff that I've written and putting it into use. Call me greedy but I also like to get paid after I'm done writing some code despite the fact that most of the world now seems to think that software should be free... but my plumber and property tax collector both still demand that I pay them cold hard cash. Since my trade is programming that means that I still need to make money from some of the programming that I do. Nonetheless, I've decided that it's time to give something back (but Jim, you're giving away all our best tricks!) so hopefully somebody will be able to make use of this code. Here's a link to a demo, I'll post the actual code later this week.
Peace-out,
L.
