Later next month it will be three years ago that we rolled back into Terrace with the intention of making a home here. It was a stressful time, wondering if I had made a good decision in pulling off of the corporate teat and moving back to the old country. Things were kind of desperate in town, seven years of housing price declines and a shutdown mill - not a pretty picture. Our rental units were a challenge as we didn't have a lot of options when units became empty and we had a few tenants that both we and our good tenants had to suffer through. The mill opened again, struggled and shutdown for good. The dismantling of the mill has been completed this summer and the yard is down to scrap salvage.
But this one trick pony looks like it has learned new tricks. The port in Prince Rupert, the expanding rail line, a big new expansion at Kitimat's Alcan facility and promising news about regional mining starts have meant that the last twelve months have seen our rental business firm up and real estate prices first begin to pull out of their doldrums and now have begun to surge. I was downtown today and the energy and vibe in the town are great. It's a good time to be back home.
I'm working on Font Fiend's ability to render strings of text for a button making function - I would like to get version 1 out sometime in September and, In recognition of hearing The Foo Fighters rendition of Baker Street, I am spinning Gerry Rafferty on the virtual turntable tonight.
