Woe Canada
June 6th, 2007
The Stanley Cup has been awarded tonight, bringing NHL hockey to an end for the season. I'm a big Vancouver Canucks fan and it was a lot of fun to watch the team play a more defensively sound game in front of the amazing Roberto Luongo this season. Unfortunately, they didn't have enough in the tank to make it to the finals although they did make it to the conference Semi-Finals which isn't bad for a team that the pundits were predicting were not going to even make the playoffs. Unfortunately, they have some severe salary cap issues so I don't think next year will be their year either but anything can happen with a great goalie and the following year, if they can acquire a couple of big, goal scoring forwards, they may be able to make a serious run at it. Here's hoping.
Anyhow, every season that the Canucks make it to the playoffs I take a full extra series to get over their ousting before picking another Canadian team to cheer for. Last year it was the Oil against Carolina. Two years before - the last year of hockey played before the 2005 lockout - it was the Flames. This year it was the Senators. I like Americans - I've got a house full of 'em - but come Stanley Cup time I cheer for the last Canadian team standing. And they tend to need it. With only 6 of the 30 teams from Canada the odds are always in favor of a US team winning - although things have gotten a lot more even with the cap era now in place. Nonetheless, it has been 13 years since a Canadian team - the Montreal Canadiens in fact - has won the cup. So, to steal a phrase - woe Canada. The irony is, 13 years ago I was living in Southern California and, you guessed it, was cheering for the Los Angeles Kings who lost to the Canadiens in that very memorable series. Curse you Guy Carbonneu!
If you don't follow hockey then you may not know that the Ducks of Anaheim are now the proud keepers of Lord Stanley's cup for this year. The only upside to this is that Teemu Selanne deserves to win the cup once during his long and illustrious career of great hockey played for bad teams. So, tonight I raise a glass to toast Teemu and all of his happy Finnish pals that he flew over for the series. Hope you guys find a cab tonight because I bet none of you will be in any shape to drive after the akavit stops flowing.
Peace-out,
L.
