What would you do if you won the lottery?
October 19th, 2007

Eight years ago Jennifer and the boys and I came up to Canada for the winter. Dad was fighting cancer, we needed a change of scenery, seemed like a good time to come home and recharge. So we garage saled most of our stuff, stored some more with a friend from Atari, piled into the Accord and drove up the coast. It was a very important winter in my life for many reasons I have previously blogged about. Dad got better. My brother died of an aneurism. I taught some people how to program. Made bread. Had lots of get togethers and fires out in the snow where kids roasted stuff on sticks. Anyhow, one of the things we did that really made me think was playing the old game of "What would you do if you won the lottery?"

As it turns out I wanted to do what I was doing already. Except not for big companies. I wanted to keep on making games but I wanted to be working on my own designs. "What would you do if you won the lottery?" might as well be "What would you want to do if you were able to retire tomorrow?" (except for the lamborghini part). So, we don't have a lamborghini or the ability to go get one and plenty of big things still loom (college for the kids, braces, etc.) that will require some financial work but essentially we are living the life we would live if we retired tomorrow. Going indie. has not been easy but I'm very glad that we took the risks of walking away from what we knew and was safe to go and live this life we have now.

My neighbour is in the process of building his own independent kind of thing, take a look at his website here, Steve's website. Steve takes nice photo's.

Peace,
L
